Before you embark on your journey make sure that your vehicle of choice is ready to travel as well. It's a good idea to check all of the items on this list:

  1. Coolant

  2. Oil

  3. Tire Pressure

  4. Spare Tire

  5. Brakes

  6. Belts, caps, hoses, and filters

  7. lights , signals, wiper blades, and wiper fluid

Emergency Items

Making sure your car is ready to go is only one important aspect to travel. Before you leave make sure to share your travel schedule with someone close to you. Make sure your cell phone is charged and that you are familiar with the route. Here are some road trip necessities:

  1. First aid kit

  2. Water and snacks

  3. Blankets and pillows

  4. Jumper cables and flares

  5. Tool kit

  6. Waterproof matches

Get Some Rest

Driving while tired is just as dangerous as driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Drowsy drivers cause over 1,500 fatal car accidents every year. This is because a lack of rest lowers your ability to react quickly, make sound decisions, and keep your car in the correct lane. Studies have shown that being awake for 18 hours causes your brain to function like someone with a BAC of 0.05. After being awake for 24 hours, this doubles to 0.10% BAC.

Make sure to get an appropriate amount of sleep before a long trip. If possible, trade off with other drivers in your vehicle. This will lower your chances of getting too tired or to easy distracted from driving for too long. Another option is to stop and stretch your legs for a while a a rest stop or just stop for the night if you are too tired to continue.
